3) National Sports Awards in India National Sports Awards are announced every year. They are conferred by the Govt. of India to sportspersons to recognize and reward their extraordinary performance and excellence in sports. The list of national sports awards in India is as follows: i) Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award: It is awarded to a sportsperson for his or her consistent, outstanding performance in the field of sports over a duration of four years. It is introduced in the year 1991 in the memory of Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and is the highest rank National Sports Award in India. The award is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to boost the morale and confidence of the players. The player receives a medal, a citation and cash prize. The first recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award is Vishwanathan Anand in 1992-93. Karnam Malleswari is the first woman to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1995-96 for weightlifting. Additionally, Pankaj Advani is the only player who has received this award for two different games: Billiards and Snookers. Famous recipients of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award:

  ii) Arjuna Award: It is the oldest National Sports Award in India, which is presented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, to a sportsperson for his or her consistent and outstanding performance in sports for a duration of four years. This award was instituted in 1961 in the memory of “Arjuna” a famous archer described in the “Mahabharata”. First recipients of Arjuna Award: There are six players from different sports who are first to receive this award in 1961:
  • Saleem Durrani in Cricket
  • Gurucharan Singh Randhawa in Athletics
  • Sarabjeet Singh in Basketball
  • Manuel Aaron in Chess
  • LB D’souza in Boxing
  • Meena Shan, a badminton player, is the first women to receive Arjuna Award in 1962.

  • Abhinav Bindra in Shooting in 2000
  • Virender Sehwag in Cricket in 2002
  • Vijender Singh in Boxing in 2006
  • Virat Kohli in Cricket in 2013

  • Yuvraj Singh in Cricket in 2012
  • Sachin Tendulkar in Cricket in 1994
  iii) Dronacharya Award: Dronacharya Award was instituted in 1985 by the Govt. of India to recognize the contribution of the coaches in sports. It is named after “Dronacharya”, the guru of Pandavas. It is presented to coaches for their contribution in producing medal winners at national and international sports events by providing right training and guidance to the sportspersons.   The recipient of this award receives a bronze statue of Dronacharya, ceremonial dress and a certificate including a cash prize. The first recipients of Dronacharya award are Bhalachandra Bhaskar Bhagwat (Wrestling coach), Om Prakash Bhardwaj (Boxing coach) and O.M. Nambiar (an Athletics coach) in 1985. And, B.I. Fernandez is the first foreign coach to receive the Dronacharya Award.   Recipients of Dronacharya Award in 2018:

  • Sukhdev Singh Pannu: Athletics Coach
