The Indian Census is providing reliable statistical information on various characteristics of the population of the country since 1972. The first census was conducted in 1881 for the entire country, since then it is conducted every ten years. It is conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India. Census 2011 is the 7th National Census of the country after independence and 15th National Census since 1872. The Census 2011 was conducted in 2 phases: house listing and population.
As per the Census of 2011, the population of India is 1.21 billion which makes India the second largest country in the world by population, after China.
