Corona Virus – Covid 19

Corona Virus – Covid 19

What is Coronavirus?

There are many types of coronaviruses, collectively they (coronaviruses) are a huge family of viruses. The threat to human lives that we are facing recently is also due to a type of coronavirus that is emerged recently so we don’t have any previous knowledge, treatment options, or vaccines for this virus. The world health organization has called this disease COVID-19 and declared it a pandemic. The symptoms of this fatal disease tends to appear within 2-14 days after exposure and generally include dry cough, fever, a runny nose, difficult breathing, etc.

How does the coronavirus spread?

One of the major mediums for the spread of this disease is the respiratory droplets of infected people. These respiratory droplets remains in the air for a longer duration and if someone inhales them he or she may get infected. Besides this, these droplets may settle on surfaces such as on tables, chairs, door knobs, handles, etc., and when someone touches these contaminated objects and then touches his own mouth, eyes, or nose, may get infected with coronavirus by allowing them to enter their bodies. Who is affected? This disease can infect people of all ages, however, based on the findings of the Disease Control and Prevention Centres in China and South Korea, the people who are above 60 tends to die more due to this infection that may due to their weaker immune system and other existing diseases such as diabetes, obesity, etc.

How can it be tested? Or Test for coronavirus!

The coronavirus is detected by performing a RT-PCR test6 which stands for Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction Test. It is a DNA-based test that instantly tells if a person is infected or not. For this test in India, there are 52 labs that belong to the Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories network of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and 10 labs that belong to th e National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the NIV.

What is the treatment for Coronavirus?

As of now, March 2020, there is no specific treatment for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection. Even there are no specific anti-virals that can be recommended for its treatment due to lack of adequate evidence from clinical trials and medical literature. At present, in India, the Union Health Ministry guidelines have advised to use anti-HIV drug combinations Lopinavir and Ritonavir based on the condition of the infected person.

How to protect yourself from Coronavirus or COVID-19:

Washing Hands: There can be various types of bacteria and viruses on our hands as we touch a lot of things while performing our day to day tasks. So, washing your hands regularly with soap, hand wash or any other alcohol-based sanitizer helps remove bacteria and viruses completely. The genetic material of viruses like coronavirus is enclosed in a layer of fat which is known as the lipid envelope. The molecules of soap, hand sanitizers or hand wash, etc., have the ability to break the lipid envelope of the virus and breaks the virus into its components which are removed by water. In addition to this, the alcohol may change the shape or denature the mushroom-shaped protein structures in the lipid envelope. These protein structures that protrude out of the lipid envelope help the virus to bind to human cells and enter the cells, so altering its shape may definitely stop virus from spreading.

Using a mask: Masks help prevent the spread of coronavirus by preventing you from inhaling the droplets containing virus. These droplets are released into the air from the sneezing and coughing of an infected person. However, it will help only if you wear the mask correctly.

Social distancing: As per WHO guidelines, social distancing is also one of the best preventive measures against coronavirus. Here, a person is required to maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) between him and others. It helps prevent the inhalation of infected droplets present in the air.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth: It helps prevent viruses from entering into your body through eyes, nose and mouth.
